The HIGHBEAMS aren't touring these days, but Dave is out there with his standup, JK has his book (and TV show!), and Fab is changing diapers and polishing his trophies. Read on.
Partners, Fab's second play to be produced this season, is the story of two shopkeepers, brothers, who have to face the realities involved with their getting older, their business failing, and their relationship with each other. Produced as part of the 2004 Baltimore Playwrights Festival Partners took first place for BEST PLAY and BEST PRODUCTION.
HIGHBEAM John Kaluta handled the technical production of Fabio's Partners, and will bring the secrets of his book, The Perfect Stage Crew, to video later this year. He and his stage crew built the set and set the lights for Partners. Read all about it at theperfectstagecrew.com, John's new website, and watch your TV listings for The Perfect Stage Crew TV Show.
Fabio's OTHER play The Throne Builders ran at Baltimore's MOBTOWN THEATER from July 8th - 25th, and took second for Playwriting. That means the 'Beams took home half of the awards presented at this year's Festival. The Throne Builders is the story of a failed farmer, his rebellious son, and a business deal gone sour. The father (and the son) are stubborn... they must each face the past and their present situation, and deal with the setbacks their small Southern town hands them. The father takes a risky chance, offered by a man that has to face similar decisions in his own life. Click here for a synopsis, and reviews from the show.
If you want to perform Partners, or The Throne Builders, contact JK through the PSC website.
JOHNNY the K Booksigning at IOTA!!SCOOBY DON'T, CEYLON and RED SHOES performed at HIGHBEAM John Kaluta's book release party at IOTA Club and Cafe. The assemblage enjoyed the music, snacks, video clips from the Perfect Stage Crew's shows, and a CAKE. The Perfect Stage Crew is a do-it-yourself manual for putting on shows of any kind with or without a big budget. Some of John's experiences with the HIGHBEAMS are alluded to, but mostly the book is about putting on plays. It's a must have for any drama director or talent show sponsor. The book lists for $19.95, and is available at a discount from the publisher, or from Amazon.com Keep up with the latest on the book, and Partners, at theperfectstagecrew.com
We have a new counter at the bottom of the page, add 2100 since we can't figure out the code to fix the counter. Any bets we beat Pete Rose's record???
FIRST THE BAD NEWS - As you must know by now WHITEY'S has closed. WHITEY'S was the first venue for the 'BEAMS, at Debbie MacFarlan's open mic, in 1989. The coolest part was several people (including two future 'BEAMS) got stuck in the line outside during our set. Send us your best WHITEY'S memories and we'll post 'em on the site. Drinking yourself silly there after your girlfriend dumps you doesn't count.
UPDATE - WHITEY'S has reopened as TALLULAH'S, an upscale wine loungey kinda place...
UPDATE - LUNA PARK is no more. The Gourmet Pizza Deli people are refurbishing...
It's the HIGHBEAMS like you've never seen them before, unless you've seen them before.

Here's the skinny on what the eight (?) HIGHBEAMS are up to: JK is teaching and published a book, (now working on the TV treatment), Fabio is playwriting and raising two kids, MB got a new day job, and Dave is working at
Burger King (he's the fry man). JD is busy with Karl Stoll and the Dangerzone (watch for 'em), Chuck is practicing old 'BEAM tunes (you read it here first) Bill is pretty close by and Christine's not too far away either. Actually, we think Christine's in West Virginia. Send us your address Christine, we've got a royalty check for you.
Be sure to check out the postcard page, all of the postcards have been scanned and are online for you. |

Back online! The HIGHBEAMS present a Buddy Holly Tribute (1999). John, Mark and Chuck briefly reformed to pay tribute to Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens on Feb. 3rd, 1999. Arch Campbell was there and put the News 4 spotlight on the opening act featuring Vince Benetti and Mark Wray (and Johnny the K). Also on the bill our old "buddy" Frank Johnson. Click here to see the clip.

Here are some early shots of the 'Beams, John Setear sitting in on harp, and Fabio playing the Les Paul at Johnny's.
That's Susan Werner with Fabio after a show at Johnny's, her first appearance in DC. The shot of Barker is from Luna Park. The 'Beams still mysteriously show up at Luna Park from time to time.

The Big Beams, (L to R) Mark, Christine, John Dickson, Bill Munson, John Kaluta, Chuck.

At "Fins," Fabio and Munson trade licks at the "Have you Seen Me?" show. It was Fab's last show with the 'Beams... for a while.
JK playin' CCR at Bad Habits, that's John Dickson on the far left.

Here are some shots from the archives, JK's first band, that's John in the blue jacket and jeans, holding his homemade guitar. The group, PHOTON, had a World Tour in 1980, at least that's what the tee-shirts read.
The second shot is at Wakefield, after hours, with some teacher friends.
